Frequently asked questions
Where is my information stored?
On your device, encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and in your own iCloud if you share the vault with family. There's no account. Expiring links and tax folders you choose to send are end-to-end encrypted before they leave your iPhone; our server only relays sealed data it can't open. See the Privacy Policy.
Where can I learn how everything works?
Open Settings → Help. The User guide explains every feature step by step and is searchable, and Replay the quick tour shows the one-page-per-feature intro again.
How does my family get access?
Life Account splits your vault key into three Family Key Cards. Any two open the vault; one alone reveals nothing. Typically: Key A travels in the Legacy Package (in iCloud Drive, which Apple releases to your Legacy Contact), Key B is a printed card for your spouse, and Key C goes to your estate attorney. Run the recovery drill in the app once a year to make sure it works.
Why not just use Apple's Legacy Contact?
Apple's Legacy Contact releases your iCloud files and photos, but not your Keychain passwords, so it can't pass on the key to an encrypted vault by itself. Life Account works with it: the Legacy Package rides along in iCloud Drive, and the Family Key Card supplies the second half of the key.
I'm opening a vault someone prepared for me. What do I do?
- Install Life Account and choose I'm here for someone I lost.
- Open their Legacy Package (in iCloud Drive › Life Account › Legacy, or the folder they gave you).
- Enter the code on the Family Key Card they gave you, or ask their estate attorney for theirs.
If the app says the code "doesn't look right", check each character; the card has a built-in checksum that catches typos. If it says the card "doesn't match this vault", the card belongs to a different or older vault.
I lost a Family Key Card.
Open Settings → Re-create package & re-test. This makes a new set of cards; old cards stop working with the new package. Give the new cards to the same people and destroy the old ones.
I changed my Face ID or passcode and can't unlock.
For your security, the vault key is tied to your current Face ID enrollment. Recover the vault with two of your Family Key Cards, using the same steps as an heir.
Is this legal advice?
No. Life Account helps you organize information and explains common steps, but it doesn't provide legal, financial, tax or medical advice. Please talk to a qualified professional about your estate.
